Petite Messe Solennelle

Saturday 21 November 2015 at 7.30pm
CBSO Centre, Berkley Street, Birmingham B1 2LF, Birmingham MAP

The Rossini Petite Messe Solennelle is one of the biggest misnomers in musical history. It is anything but ‘petite’ and is most certainly not ‘solennelle’!
One of the most beautifully tuneful, quasi operatic masses in the repertoire, Rossini described it as his ‘last sin of old age’. Although orchestral parts were added later Rossini originally composed it in 1863 for soloists, SATB chorus and just two pianos & harmonium. This performance by Birmingham Bach Choir and five guest soloists will follow the composer’s original intention with accompaniment by harmonium and piano, played by the longfordbrown piano duo.
The work avoids the cloying sentimentality of other masses of this period by simply showing the composer having a good time – and giving everyone performing and listening a good time too.
